NEIYA Headed East

All packed up and headed east, somewhere in Ohio, maybe near Toledo. Who cares, will get there when we get there.

Drive good so far, haven’t done anything silly like put diesel in a car that takes gas for fuel. In fact I took that little stunt a step further and didn’t put anything at all in the tank which left us on the side of the road for about 20 minutes waiting for AAA.

As if I hadn’t had my chops busted enough yet this trip Oliver started immediately, which is funny since he was marooned right along with me.

AAA was there in minutes and a half hour later we had breakfast w/ Atkins and his father. It was great to see his father.

Enjoying the drive through the heartland, batting the breeze about all the highs and lows of the week. Many more of the former-

We noted that Chris Miller may not have been picked as top rookie but we think he deserves a mention, 35th overall in Gold Fleet, best finish an 18th place- Very impressive.

Make next year the year!

Stay tuned for weekend options….

DN NAs DONE!

GREAT day of racing out here in Madison- The committee kept us hopping all day to put ten races in the books. The breeze was light in the morning and built all day- the las two races were full-on!

Matt Struble sailed very well to take first, Ron Sherry rallied to take second and yours truly was third- Chad Atkins took eighth behind Jim Hadley of NJ.

Awesome time had by all- first photo is Mike Clapp, top junior- second is Scott Valentine from LI with trophies, third is Rick Gordon from upstate NY, fourth is Warren Nethercoate from NS, fifth is a bunch of crazy Europeans, sixth is Atkins, seventh is Hadley.

All in all a lot of eastern region sailors finished in the money- Well done everyone!! Well done to Chris Miller and Hank Kaiser for completing their first NA champs- Well done boys!

Great to see all the hardcore cases out here- Thanks to all the organizers, scorers, PRO people, mark movers… Trust me, it takes an army to put on an event like this and we thank them all!

Looking forward to sailing back in home territory- think ice! T

2016 DN NA Thursday Report

Hello All,

Big day at the NAs. Breeze still up, wild full speed sailing all day.

Personally I one-upped myself.   My spin yesterday paled in comparison to today’s leeward mark spin and out-of-boat experience.   No harm done, got back in and finished the race.

Other than that a good day-  the eastern gang is doing well-   LI, NJ, RI, NY, CT, all having a blast and enjoying some moments of brilliance!  Check attached results to see how your gang is doing!

Last day of racing tomorrow,  will see what the day brings!

Put this one on your calendar for next year folks…

Field Trip to Harken – Pewaukee, WI

Since it was blowing 30kts by lunch time we had the afternoon off.

Veteran DN sailor Steve Orlebeke invited the fleet to see where he works, which happens to be the Harken plant in Pewaukee.

So. Freaking. Cool. Giant facility, clean as a whistle, some very cool machinery…. Fascinating to see where our favorite blocks come from and how they go together. Also wild to see some of the big stuff they are working on-

Hard to do it justice but maybe the pics will help-

Capped the day with dinner at a steak joint where Al Capone and other Chicago gangsters used to hang out when the heat was on….

Stay tuned! T

Big Day At NAs

Big breeze saw the gold qualifier done and gold fleet race one done- That’s the good news- Bad news is a few masts gave up and a few boats need a little patching up!

Personally I had an interesting race…. Off the line from spot #18, good acceleration and clear air. Boat felt good and was going well. Tacked over to port as soon as I could.

Big lifting puffs from the left were a gift from above- I left the darling mark to port and tacked over, rounded the top mark with a decent lead.

Took off like a shot down the run and of course over stood the layline by a mile and was passed by Matt Struble, Ron Sherry, and Jost Kolb. Oops….

Passed Jost at the mark rounding, sneaked past Ron on the beat and got back into second. The CSI sled was wicked up and tuned in! Breeze was way up, easing sheet upwind was necessary to keep the mast off the ice…. Radical.

Next leg over stood again but by less- held onto second.

Next beat was able to stay to windward of Ron to the port layline then tacked for the mark. One leg to go, reminded myself aloud not to do anything stupid….

Downwind breeze was up, over stood by a bit again, boat was bouncing all over and really twitchy- here’s where it gets interesting…..

About 100 yards from the finish- Neck and neck w Ron Sherry, second place on the line. I said aloud to myself “don’t do anything dumb, second is as good as first”. I should have dropped the sheet and coasted over the line but NOOOOO, I just had to push it and haul the sheet a little- heading up to cross the line and suddenly the world was spinning- Rapidly.

Long story short I did at least a 360, maybe a 720. It happened fast. When the rotation stopped I could see orange out of my left eye- I figured that was the mark so all good there. Out of my right eye I could see a checkered flag being held by a rapidly back-pedaling John Atkins. So I was pointed the right way and had actually crossed the line (possibly stern first) to take third.

I did notice in the middle of all this that the entire silver fleet was watching along with every boat behind me, so I get points or maximum public self-humiliation. I didn’t even think about trying to play it cool about this one! The chop-busting started immediately- jokes about showing off, grandstanding for the cameras, needing a tutu for the boat since it pirouettes like a ballet dancer etc… What the hell, I still got a third!

Stay tuned for more- the second part of the day was pretty cool too…. Trust me.

“Deja Vu All Over Again”

No breeze again today at the DN NAs….. But at least we made it out to the race course for awhile….

The local club put on a mid-lake BBQ for everyone- many thanks to the crew that made that happen- helped ease the pain quite a bit!

No racing but more BBQ waiting when we got in- Along with a keg. In the photo see Chris Miller of LI recovering from the psychological strain of standing around on the ice all day- Obviously he is teetering on the brink of a total mental meltdown.

Should be some breeze tomorrow- Fingers crossed!

NA Day One

Hey Folks-

The qualifier race is in the books here at the NAs-

Matt Struble barely made the time limit in the light air to take the top spot- lots of other boats struggled and the scorers have their work cut out for them tonight….

We hope to have a little more breeze tomorrow- stay tuned!

As for the photos, that would be our own Oliver Moore fixing a broken hiking rack in the hotel room. Wish I’d taken photos of us dragging it up the stairwell to the fourth floor-

In any case it just wouldn’t be a DN regatta without a little hotel room repair job!

Stay tuned- Hope everyone gets some sailing out that way-

NA Champs Started

Hey Folks- flags raised, registration under way, race one tomorrow if we have breeze….

Decent turnout- Plenty of eastern representation!

Check the photos:
-According to my car thermometer it was 70F as I drove across Ohio….
-Rick Lemberg being interviewed for French TV
-Deb Whitehorse gets a special award (a dozen roses) for being generally awesome
-flag raising ceremony.

The NA Option

Hey Folks-
Bummer about the NE champs…. But if you have a DN and some free time this week it isn’t too late to hit the road and make it to the DN North American champs!

Site is Madison, WI, about 15-19 hrs from New England, depending on where you are….

Racing to start Monday, can register by phone or online until Sunday evening (I think- check IDNIYRA bulletin board for details on that, lodging, etc)

New England will be well represented- At least seven NEIYA sailors on the way or already there- ice looks pretty good…. The planets may just line up for this one.

Stay tuned! T

Lining Up To Windward — The NEIYA Circles the Globe

NEIYA Reach

Hey Folks-

A quick glance at the NEIYA home page reveals that we have 900 people following the site online — Kind of a cool milestone for a sleepy little club in New England…

Welcome from near to far. We have followers from every non-temperate State and many that only see ice in their rocks glasses as well as most Canadian Provinces. Across the pond Europe is well represented. Believe it or not we have a few followers from various African nations and warmer parts of Asia. On the Pacific side we have Kiwis and Aussie. No surprise being two nations chock full of “Sailing Fools”.

Not bad!  Good to know that we have so many interested souls out there — Well done gang!

Notably absent from the honorable 900 — Greenland and Alberta Canada. Can we get a few followers from there and anywhere?

Looking forward to hitting the 1000 mark-  encourage your friends to sign up — it’s really easy and only takes a second.  The more the merrier! Just enter your email address in the right column.

And of course signing up to be a full member is quick and easy too — not to mention cheaper than dirt.  So hit the site and click the buttons and join the gang —

And as always,  THINK ICE!

P.S. The season is not done yet. See you on the ice…

Kingston Intergalactic Invitational DN Champs – February 6-7- How It Was Won!

Hello All- Last weekend the Canadian gang somehow managed to get a regatta in the books on Lake Col By (did I spell that right?). Sounds like they had a good turnout and some good racing which saw Peter Van Rossem crowned Intergalactic DN Champion- Nice job Peter! Here he tells us about the regatta and how he took the top spot:

“Saturday ice conditions were fast even though we had about an inch of snow on deck. It was warm which didn’t allow for the snow to get hard and crusty. Wind started out to be about 10 plus kts and steadily increased over the afternoon to major puffs of 15-20. At the end of the day snow crystals were flowing across the deck, blasting the top surface of the ice to a point that we started seeing the actual ice at the end of the day. This set us up great for Sunday BTW, where the temps rose above freezing making the ice slippery …good cause the wind was light.

Saturday I think we had 14 boats out where 12 were actually racing.
I used my 1D Speed sail the whole day and for skates, 3/16 90 degree Inserts with 15” of flat. My mast is a CSI/Kent 4.1 built in 2013 or 2014, can’t recall exactly. My sail was low on the mast , almost two blocked at the forward blocks and main sheet was on hard the whole time…except for in the extreme puffs later in the day where I has do let off for a split second and then bring right back in again to keep the boat flat.

The lake is a small lake and there were big shifts to be gained or lost. I seemed to have been able to capitalize on the winds that I had as John Curtis was equally as fast as I on and off the wind. Interesting taking into account that I have a few pounds on him!

Sunday was light. Started out with some nice breeze which I missed sailing in as I was on shore, rigging my boat. (You Snooze you Loose I guess.) Thanks guys for holding out for me before starting the Race BTW!

Sunday Ice was smooth slippery, as I mentioned because of the mild day.
Winds were the best when we started… at 5-8kts. And gradually fading out to pushing my boat once at the top mark and then several times on the last downwind to cross the line.

I used a used (2000 yr)1D Full Power Sail that I just acquired from Claude Morin in Montreal. Incidentally, John and I both had the same sail and rig and boom (for comparison) Not sure about their blades but I used a pair of Duhamel 100’s Inserts. 20 in of flat.

The starts were in light air so what I did was head down to almost 90 Degrees to the true wind and got my speed up asap. Heading up slowly to find the true groove of the wind and boat speed combination. . This was key to getting off the line with speed…all the while looking at my telltales to see if I was too high or too low. I found this sailing to be a tough groove after looking at John sailing way higher, but with less speed.

Downwind you had to sail deep, past the lay lines in order to keep the power in the boat. Shifts and pressure played a big part in keeping your boat moving. Sail trim was full on up wind while easing off in the lulls to try to keep the air flowing over the sail. This was extremely important on the downwind legs where, pulling in too tight flattened the sail too much leaving no power to keep you moving . I always made sure that if I could, I had max speed at the top of the windward mark. This allowed me max speed (Apparent wind) on the downwind for as long as it lasted.

It was really good to see some of our local boats definitely speeding up this year over last. Sunday could have easily been a pushing race, and was for some but others have got a better grasp at getting their boats moving for sure. Good to see!”

Getting on the Road for Home

Smokin!

Blazing Ecstasy!

Hey Folks:

The weary and soggy but upbeat American squad hoofed it back to Germany last night.

Sailing and packing the trailer in the rain means that everything we have is soaked and covered with beach sand. So today is given to hanging sails, drying clothes, washing sand off everything…. All the glamour stuff.

You can see in the photos the hanging sails, piles of gear, and various tasks being completed.

What the pics don’t convey is the stereo blasting Bruce Springsteen and the aroma of fermenting laundry and speed suits….

You probably can see that our host, Mr Torsten Siems, has a shop we can all be envious of! Many thanks to him for letting us have the run of the place.

Anyway as all ice boaters know you have to do the agony of the shop to enjoy the ecstasy of blazing across the ice…. See the photos!

Hope all well in NE and hope everyone is gearing up for the NA champs!

Final Report From 2016 DN Gold Cup

2016_DN_Worlds_start
Hello All-
The 2016 DN Gold Cup is in the books-

AWESOME day of sailing here- big breeze and fast ice saw wild sailing and several masts bite the dust-

I broke my CSI all-carbon prototype and while this was a bummer it left me on the starboard layline as the fleet did two more laps- Best seat in the house as forty-plus boats roared by. Silver linings….

Ron Sherry was top US finisher in 5th (with one bullet to his credit). In fourth was Lukasz Zakrzewski, third went to Vaiko Vooremaa. Michal Burczynski was an early leader but in the end a consistent performance by Karol Jablonski saw him take his tenth GC. Not bad!

Check DN Europe site for more info and results

Great dinner, European Champs begin tomorrow. Should be interesting!

The above picture is the starting area- one fleet on the line, one in the pit, and one on the course out of the photo. Not bad!

DN Worlds Update

Hello from Sweden!

The US group is here in Sweden in a town that I can’t name but sounds like “no shopping”…. Too tired to look it up right now-

The drive up from Germany was uneventful except for one incident at a gas station. One van may or may not have been fueled up with regular gas when it needed diesel. There may have been some serious siphoning going on to fix the problem. There may be a few buckets of diesel/gas mix available cheap at the launch site. The guy who pumped the gas into the diesel tank may or may not be from Plymouth, MA….

Anyway the issue was fixed and they only lost about three hours and a ton of respect. No worries- The van is nine the worse for wear-

Opening ceremonies tonight, racing starts tomorrow-

Excited to know the Doc Fellows is happening right now on sweet ice at Moosehead- Have a blast gang! Psyched to hear how it goes!

From Europe Crew

Hello All- Looks like the New England contingent has made it to Germany- all the gear seems to have arrived in good shape as well-

See the photos- The first is the giant pile of gear at Logan- this caused eye rolling and consternation among the staff (probably because Steve Madden looks pretty shady) but Eric can be incredibly diplomatic when necessary and he convinced them to load it all on the plane and even got a pretty good rate in the process! As always it was a strange feeling leaving it all on the floor to be carried off by total strangers into the behind the scenes chaos of Logan International…. Ugh.

Next photo is the 747. Which I happen to think is just an amazingly cool airplane. I also like the SR-71 Blackbird but it’s hard to get a ride in one of those….

Next photo look closely at the base of the right wing (talking about the plane, not politics). Note two hulls and two bundles of masts about to be sent into the cargo hold. We saw the guys drop one hull (Steve’s!) and one bundle of masts. It was hard to watch. As far as we know nothing was damaged….

Last photo is gear and people in Frankfurt. Not much worse for wear!

Anyway enough of the gear-schlep stories. Have to go assemble boats and figure out where we will be sailing….

Our hosts Jorg and Torsten have already gone above and beyond- Thanks to them!

Hope there is sailing on the agenda back in NE- Rip it up gang!

TO THE DN WORLDS!

Hey Folks- the NEIYA delegation is on the way to the airport! Coach Kent is driving the van and dropping us off, then it will be Eric Anderson, Eben Whitcomb, T Thieler, and very last minute addition (drum roll please) Steve Madden!

When I say last-minute I’m not kidding- he booked his ticket yesterday at about two in the afternoon. Glad he decided to make the trip- This should be fun!

We will be traveling with German hosts (Jorg Bohn and company) plus a group of troublemakers from the Midwest-

Stay tuned to this site and the Four Lakes Ice Yacht Club site for updates.

In the meantime wish us luck at the airport and have some good sailing while we are gone-

CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS POSTPONED / NE CHAMPS NOT DEAD YET!!

Hey Folks- Hopes were high to do either the Canadian Champs or the New England Champs this weekend- Bad news is it looks like Canada is out due to the recent big wind and snow that rolled through the region.

From Canadian head honcho Warren Nethercoate….
“Colonel By lake received 3 to 5 inches of wind-blown snow last night and there is a wet area in the centre of the plate (the racing area). Probability of successfully racing on this plate this weekend is poor, so we are postponing to a future date. There is about 5 inches of ice, so future prospects for the lake are good.

Both Trenton and Montreal lost their ice sheets over the last few days, so we need to wait for the next freeze for bigger ice.”

Sounds like most of New England was hit pretty hard too so hopes not too high for NE champs at the moment but you never know! Stay tuned to this site and the IDNIYRA bulletin board for details.

Don’t despair gang, this season may be taking awhile to get started but recall that we were still sailing in April last year….
