Textbook Bad Day On The Water….

Ever had a disappointing day on the ice due to gear failure? Maybe you can relate to this video…

It’s the 2003 America’s Cup, Race 1, ALINGHI vs TEAM NEW ZEALAND. The notoriously tough one for Team NZ, boat taking on water, boom broken, jibs ripping out of the headfoil…. Not what you need in the first 30 minutes of an America’s Cup race. Glad no one injured.

Very instructive though, I guess the lesson is you have to practice in the conditions you are going to race in and build a little reliability into your gear. Gotta finish to win! Listen closely to the commentators and on-board audio. Can glean a few lessons here and there….

Williams Bay Speaker Series, Iceboating Is The Topic For Saturday

Hey Folks- Jane Pegel gives us all this heads-up on a very interesting event out in Wisconsin- If you are in the area be sure to check it out!

Good evening iceboaters.

The Village of Williams Bay was incorporated in 1919. For the next few months
there will be a number of events celebrating the centennial.

The Williams Bay Centennial Speaker Series is part of the celebration . The Skeeter Ice Boat Club was
incorporated in 1933 and holds a significant roll in the history of the Village. Iceboating is the Speaker Series
topic for Saturday, March 30. Spark Lundberg, who has been successfully building and racing iceboats for over 60 years,
and Susie Pegel, a Williams Bay native who began racing a DN in her early teens, will be giving a presentation
about iceboating in Williams Bay and the Geneva Lake area.

The event will be in the council room of Williams Bay Village Hall beginning at 10:00 a.m. CDT.
To get to the Village Hall – take Stark St. west off Wisconsin Hwy 67, on the north side of the Village.
( Burroughs’ Floor Coverings on the corner). Drive past the tennis courts to the stop sign at the west end of Stark St.
Turn right and drive up the hill to the Village Hall.

Enjoy! No charge!

2019 HardWay DONE!

Hey Folks- the intrepid group in the photos pulled off a hard water lap of Winnipesaukee today!

Stay tuned for a full report but as I understand it there was good breeze, decent ice, and minimal drama!

Congrats to all who made it-

Maybe just one more weekend is on the way???

Stay tuned….

Winni Hardway Attempt ON For Today 3-26-19

There is a Hardway in the works- apologies for the short notice but if you are in the area and looking for adventure join Lee Spiller and Charles Silfvenius on Tuesday and see if you can do the legendary Hardway!!

The plan is to leave Brewster Beach early, planning on 9:30 but 10 is probably what will happen. We’d like to get up and down the lake before the sun works the ice too much.

Winni was sailed yesterday and is in good shape for spring. Only one spot to watch out for and that is a pressure ridge with several openings along it off of Welch Island across to Eastern Shire. Plenty of spots to go over . Warming weather later holds no promise of things lasting so enjoy it while we have it!

Good luck and send photos!

Pushaw Lake

Several boats sailed Pushaw Lake in Orono ME today- good breeze and decent ice surface BUT there are some drain holes, some big enough to eat a whole boat! Proceed with caution of you go at all…

Ice Up North

Hey Folks- the CIBC site is reporting good things about Winni and better things about Pushaw…. will be cruising and/or scrub racing at one or the other tomorrow.

Canadian DN Championships Wrap Up

The 2019 Canadian DN champs are in the books! Just about two dozen boats turned up to race on smooth ice and good breeze and it was a memorable day!

Sailors from as far north as Nova Scotia, as far south as RI, and as far west as MI were in attendance as well as one or two transplants from Poland and Switzerland so it had a multinational flavor…

Results are up on the Kingston Yacht Club site at https://results.kingstonyachtclub.com/?r=2019/Regattas/2019%20DN%20Canadian%20Championships.htm

Great work by Peter Kraszewski (PRO) getting the races of quickly in changing winds. Thanks to all the scorers too for the hard work in the cold and wind.

And thanks to Peter Van Rossem for putting the whole thing together!

Stay tuned, the ice may hang in there for awhile, could be doing more sailing up there before this season is out-

This Coming Weekend….

Hello All- Great sailing up in Kingston, ON at the Canadian DN champs last weekend- great ice, good breeze, and all in the month of March!
