Someone Fired Up The WayBack Machine…
This was on Reddit- someone found their grandfathers 8mm films of iceboats tearing it up on Lake Winnebago…. TOO COOL!!!

Battle Lake, MN
First NE brigade has hit the rendezvous point for Great Western Challenge. Atkins and Gordon are in Battle Lake MN. Look it up, it’s out there! Sailing starts either this afternoon or tomorrow depending on how beat up they are from the drive. Stay tuned….

Great Western Migration….
The season has begun…. Sailors from all over New England and Canada are headed west, bound for somewhere in Minnesota for the big kick-off….
Stay tuned for photos and updates from our representatives on the road. I will be getting reports from Chad Atkins, Chris Gordon, Jeff Kent and Bernd Zeiger. I will do my best to translate them into things normal people can actually understand and relate to.
For “official” regatta news click here: http://iceboating.net/
Good luck to all- drive safe, sail safe, kick some butt and know that those of us left behind are insanely jealous….

Great Western Challenge Update….
This is from the Minnesota website via Andre Baby- looks like things are shaping up for the Western Challenge…. Change the oil in the car, check the trailer lights, get the boats out, and start making travel plans!
The first regatta of the season is scheduled for Friday Nov 30-Dec 2, 2018. Per JD, usual location will be best ice in Minnesota. We have been sailing on ice since Nov 16. Many lakes up north are now thick enough.
We now have a beautiful new freeze of Battle Lake, just north of our usual Christina near Ashby, Mn.
A number of lakes closer to Minneapolis should come thru in the next week. Very little snow predicted in our regatta locations. Time to sharpen runners and check your equipment. Watch this site or Facebook Minnesota Iceboaters for updates.

Bob Crinon. Poster Boy.
Hey Folks-
If you search the interweb for “North DN Sails” you’ll come upon this great shot of Bob Crinion of Nova Scotia puttin’ a hurtin’ on Chris Miller of Long Island at the North American champs last year.
It’s a great shot even if Bob does have his elbow out of the boat. And his head up in the air. And his toes sticking straight up. (Sorry Bob, couldn’t resist! It’s a New England thing….) If you want to know who is driving the boats in the background you’ll have to do your own research!
By the way the new North Sails are pretty sexy and if you want some info on them check out https://northsails.com/sailing/en/od/dn-iceboat

ICE REPORTS
Hey Gang- John Ziermann sent this out from LI, a good guide to a perfect ice report- Good time to refresh your memory!
TO ALL:
At one of our LRIBYC club meeting someone brought up the ever
important “Ice Report Content”.
What is the Perfect Report?
I need advice and some suggestions.
Here are some of my thoughts and I got some of what you see
below from John S. at NEIYA.(no particular order)
a. Where is the ice?
b. When did you check?
c. Name the nearest town.
d. Where is the access?
e. Ice thickness and composition (4 inches black ice with 3 inches of snow ice on top).
f. How much of the ice did you check?(10ft.,10yds,10mi)
g. State the hazards.(pressure ridge, shell ice, drain holes, open holes)
h. Size of the plate.
i. How did you survey the ice? (walk, skate, bike, sail, drive by, fly over)
j. Best way to get in touch with you to confirm information.
Some of us will drive a long way if we knew it was worth it.
ALL OF US WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU SAVE US THE TRIP!

In any case he writes:
“Just back from Whitefish Lake
4″ of Black ice with maybe 1/4″ covering of Snow.Wind 15 gusting to 20 made for a fast ride!”
Well done Mike- Look forward to hearing from you-

Support Boatbuilding Anyone?
Hey Gang-
We all love boats and most of us love building and working on them. There is an organization down in NYC called Rocking The Boat that helps kids experience the agony and ecstasy that building, maintaining, and even sailing a boat can bring. Heck, maybe one of these kids will come up with the next revolutionary iceboat!
My friend Kit Van Wagner is rowing around Manhattan this weekend to help keep Rocking The Boat afloat. She is aiming to raise $2,000 or more by this Friday and is getting close! If you want to help her and the kids out take a look at the website and click the second link to make a donation. It’s easy (even I could do it) and every little bit helps (even this frugal Yankee donated a few bucks). And I think it’s tax deduct-able too!
Great way to give a little back and earn some good karma points….
Many thanks, T Thieler DN US 5224

Greenport Maritime Festival
From Mike Acebo out on LI. Check it out!! Sounds pretty cool- grab a potential rookie and head out!
THIS WEEKEND!
Yes we will display boats at the Greenport Maritime Festival (https://www.greenportvillage.com/maritime-festival/). The Museum has requested Iceboats. I have 2 J14s, one Opti, one mini under construction along with an older two seat C Skeeter. I hope to get another Orient J 14 which is for sale and an Opti for sale. One or two DNs would be nice. Set up is Friday around 3:00pm or Sat morning. Street closes at 9:00am. Interpreters are welcome Sat. & Sun. All Orient boats can be broken down Sun. PM or Mon AM. LR boats on Sunday. Bob Boyle with his wheeled Mini would be great. We could roll it along in the Parade! Let me know if you want to join in the fun. Bring a chair, drink beer, tell lies (iceboating stories)
J14 # 25 in Orient is now for sail, I mean sale! Another quality original Orient boat.

DN CLASS NOTICE OF DUES
Hey Gang- That time of year! If you are a DN sailor (or would like to be) it’s time to crowbar the wallet open and pay the class dues.
At a whopping $26 per year it’s a pretty good value! You can also get a sustaining membership for an extra $10 or even make a donation to help support the class.
It’s so easy to do online that even Your Commodore was able to do it in under two minutes.

Hal Bowman In The News
If you do the big DN Regattas you’ve seen or met Hal Bowman ripping it up in his yellow DN (US 1277). He and his wife Mercedes (scorekeeper extraordinaire) hit all the big events. Indeed, Hal is one of the best iceboaters to come out of North Carolina in years!
When he isn’t blasting around the course he is involved in all kinds of other interesting stuff, mostly at least a few hundred feet off the ground. One is doing flyovers at various events around NC in his vintage Russian YAK airplane. Check out the article below.
If you ever get to meet this guy be sure to corner him and get him started telling flying stories…. you won’t be disappointed!
We were lucky to see Hal and Merc recently when they buzzed through New England. See photo of Hal and Merc at Mystic Seaport with NEIYA stalwarts Katie Bradford, Eben Whitcomb, and T Thieler. Also see photo illustrating the luxury accommodations that Hal’s boat enjoys in the off-season….
