Hadley’s Catch Of The Day
Here we see NJ iceboater and Runner Tracks cover boy Jim Hadley, just back from a two hour fishing trip that netted him two four foot striped bass, a three foot baby and five-plus foot pregnant wife. Not a bad haul!

DN BRIDGE

Top photo: The bridge in Mikolajki, Poland.
Bottom photo by Gretchen Dorian from the 2011 DN Gold Cup.
Only In Poland
Only in Poland would a bridge be built with architecture inspired by a DN! As seen on Tomasz Zakrzewski’s P55 Facebook page: ” Mikolajki‘s new bridge pylon was inspired by DN rig says City Major Piotr Jakubowski in his interview. Local sailors won DN Worlds three times: Tomasz Zakrzewski (2012, 2013) and Wladyslaw Stefanowicz (1990). Mikolajki Sailing Club’s wall of fame has also photos of other Wolds and Europeans medalists: Lukasz Zakrzewski and Robert Graczyk . Fleet rich in youth DN and Ice Opti sailors from Mikolajki supported by parents, sailing club and authorities will soon take over. If they are successful I see plenty of other DN architectural inspirations. Good luck.”
NOTE- Glad they chose to emulate a raked mast and not a bent plank….
Last Weekend In Halifax
Looks like they had some good ice on Lake Mushamush.
OK, maybe it wasn’t last weekend but it looks like they had a good one- Pretty good turnout, looks like good breeze, what else can you ask for?!?
Thanks to Howard Garland for the photos!

Lake Baikal Photos
I’m not sure who put this together but there are some great photos of last spring’s Lake Baikal regatta to be seen- Have a look!
Speaking of the Baikal Regatta, there has been some interest from a few New Englanders in participating- We are looking into cost and logistics and figuring out how feasible this might be- Stay tuned- In the meantime click the link and enjoy the photos- Think Ice!

MATT McCAULEY LAYS DOWN GROOVE
Matt McCauley used to lay down three grooves at a time racing his DN but has backed off on the ice sailing to focus more on the low end of things- specifically the bass. Similar to the DN as it is made of wood and kind of hard to transport but lots of fun to play with once you get it set up.
Presumably he is only laying down one groove at a time these days, unless of course he is getting into some complex polyrhythmic stuff- you never know with these jazz cats….
The former NEIYA Commodore was spotted playing in a jazz trio during an art show at the Guilford, CT Art Center. He was last sighted at the DN Gold Cup in Kingston, ON where he won a brand new North FO-1 sail- Glad to see him out and about and playing up a storm- hope to see him on the ice this winter!

WORLD MATCH RACE TOUR IN RI
Ever seen 32 foot catamarans match race? No? Would you like to? Head for Newport RI from May 30-June 4 and check out the World Match Race Tour.
I’ve seen some of this racing online and it’s pretty exciting- tons of lead changes and close boat-on-boat action, all going on a big multihull speeds….
Take a look at the websites and check your calendars- couch space at my house in Newport if anyone needs it-

Twelve Meters In Breeze
Bill Converse was down in Newport during the big breeze a few days back and had his camera ready as always-
He was lucky to catch two 12 Meter yachts cruising by- you know the breeze is up when they don’t bother with mainsails!
The light blue one is a Philip Rhodes design called WEATHERLY, which was passed over for the America’s Cup defense in 1958 while skippered by Arthur Knapp. However she bounced back in 1962 under “Bus” Mosbacher to win the defense trials and defend the Cup successfully against the Australian “GRETEL”
The red one is AMERICAN EAGLE- never made it into the America’s Cup but was owned by Ted Turner, who sailed it and raced it all over the world- inshore and offshore, SORC, transatlantic, won a ton of events with it in spite of the fact the 12 meters weren’t meant for offshore stuff….. He may have even taken her in the Sydney to Hobart race? He was one crazy dude back in the day….
Thanks for the photos Bill- get back to work!

Bethel, AK Ice Yacht Club
Katie Bradford forwarded this little item-
Kathy Sinnet is the owner of this sweatshirt; She says it is from her DN sailing days in Alaska- Probably no shortage of ice up that way! Thanks for sending the photo- Hope to see you both on the ice around here this season! T
Great Iceboat Seat
Don Stearns checks in with this interesting find….
“This seat may be 100 years old but the design and construction caught my eye. Found it in an antique shop and fell in love with it.
Made in Norway Maine by Mr Tubbs, this thing is light weight, low center of gravity, and shows its heritage. We could all use a comfy fit these days!
I have an old small guide canoe so that’s where it is headed. The idea that it would fit in a larger iceboat was natural.
Iceboaters are always looking to upgrade. It’s in their genes….
This would not fit a DN. Too bad!”

ICEBOATS ON DISPLAY IN NH!
Charles Silfvenius checks in with this- be sure to check it out- bring a friend!
The New Hampshire Boat Museum will be having a small display this year on iceboating.
I have helped restore a vintage 30’s something stern steerer, and along with that there is my old Sarns style DN.
We also have an old skate sale to display in addition to some video of one of the Frolics as well.
May 28 is opening day.

NJ Highlands, Ferries, The Navasink & the Best IceBoat Club House Around
Americans In Russia!
Eben Whitcomb found this article in a West System newsletter that was on the shelf- great story about how Jan Gougeon topped the fleet in Siberia, aided and abetted by NEIYA stalwarts Leo Healy, Henry Stone and Harold Chamberlain. That trip must have been some adventure- Click the photo, zoom in and enjoy the story! T

NYC AMERICA’S CUP ON TV TODAY
If you want to see what the fuss in NYC is about but can’t get there in person turn on the NBCSP channel- today’s races will be on live from 2-4 PM.
The boats are foiling, wing-masted catamarans that are capable of speeds that are pretty impressive for soft water…. The racing should be interesting today with big breeze in the forecast, a ludicrously huge spectator fleet, and the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.
Look for a big spectator boat called “WALL STREET” being driven by the NEIYA’s own Dave Clapp!
Happy Viewing, MR T

NYC America’s Cup LIVE
On the water here in NYC- not much action as no wind so far- plenty of spectator craft- see two J-Class yachts; RANGER and VELSHEDA, two 12 meters; AMERICA II and FREEDOM, and a replica of the AMERICA herself.
Captain Clapp keeping us in the front row, hope we get some action. Check out the photos-
And if you’re near Red Bank this afternoon come check out the club! T

NYC AMERICA”S CUP VIEWING / RED BANK ICE YACHT CLUB
Looks like the spectator boat is sold out for the AC World Series in NYC this weekend-
Good news is that Dave Clapp says you can still check the races out by taking the SeaStreak Ferry from either Highlands or Atlantic Highlands into Manhattan and watching from Battery Park or pretty much anywhere in the North Cove Marina area. There should be a good view from the beach as the race course will be in close to the waterfront- I think you can also get up close and personal with the boats and crews when they dock in at North Cove Marina. Click the link for complete info:
And don’t forget Saturday afternoon Dave will have any takers to the Red Bank Ice Yacht Club to hang out, check out the club, and have some food and drinks- Should be a good time!
I’ll be taking off by road from Newport RI early Saturday AM- Give me a shout if you are looking to carpool- Also send me an email at t_thieler@yahoo.com so we can get a head count- Stay tuned to this site for updates-
Hope to see everyone there! Cheers, T

Update…. America’s Cup World Series- See It Live In NYC!!
Hello All- this Saturday is the day! If you are interested be sure to click the link and get a ticket- After that send me an email at t_thieler@yahoo.com so we can get a bit of a head count for the get-together at the Red Bank Ice Yacht Club after the racing.
I’ll be driving down from Newport, most likely early Saturday AM- I have room for six passengers in the van so if you’d like to carpool email me! Can pick up as we roll down I-95.
Event info and links below- read on!
The America’s Cup World Series is coming to NYC on May 7-8!! All the teams will be racing on 48-foot foiling, wing-sailed catamarans. This is one of several lead-up events to the Cup itself- the points matter so this is no exhibition match, the teams will be out for blood and should good to watch- even though they don’t go as fast as iceboats. (Sorry, couldn’t resist….) Info here:
https://www.americascup.com/en/news/2137_Americas-Cup-Racing-Returns-to-New-York-for-First-Time-in-96-Years.html
More good news as our own Dave Clapp will be running a SeaStreak spectator boat- he tells me that the boat has a special VIP flag which will allow it to get a bit closer to the racecourse than other spectator boats, and you know if Dave is driving he will push it as close as possible. Plus tickets include an open bar, food, and hopefully plenty of other iceboaters to talk with! Promises to be an interesting day to say the least!
The boat will be leaving from either Atlantic Highlands or Highlands, NJ Won’t know until Thursday or Friday) near Red Bank. We are recommending that people try to make Saturday- Dave is making arrangements to have a get-together for everyone at the historic Red Bank Ice Boat And Yacht Club Saturday evening after the boat gets in. That should be really cool, I’ve heard that the clubhouse there is really something-
More details to follow but for now look for tickets at http://seastreak.com/tour-and-event-cruises/americas-cup-sailboat-races/
Hope to see everyone on the boat and/or at the RBIYBC Saturday night!

Chad Goes North…
While most of us are happy to buy the same sails used by the top of the DN fleet from a few of the usual suspects, one of our own Chad Atkins has been working directly with North Sails. Read all about it in his interview with North.
We’re all looking forward to seeing more development from Chad and North next season.
For a little less eye strain check here. http://theneiya.org/north-sails-chad-atkins-interview/

Sad News….
On a sad note, Bob Baker from Sagamore Beach, MA passed away this week. Bob took to Ice Boating along with me when we saw them sailing on Great Herring Pond. We just had to get in on this great fun. The Ice Cats were going through trials and some DN’s were zipping around. Bob was such an artist and doer! Bob got out of the gate quickly, I had to save up to get a rig. Within a very short period of time, Bob and Mary got two old DN’s and a Pipe Boat/Sunfish from Lake Wequaquet, buffed ‘em up good, tricked out a trailer and came to the ice in great style. I got to know this extraordinary human being through Ice Boating and will take Bob’s spirit to the ice with me every time I sail. Bob and Mary, lifemates like no others I’ve ever met, logged plenty of days in their DN’s. Mary I hear was a Long Island Sound racer as a youngster, Bob was one of the original Surfers on the piers in Southern California and everywhere else in the world. He shaped many cutting edge small boards for surfers on the left coast. Bob was an inspiration and a great friend. I am going to miss zipping around on the ice with him.

12 Meter World Champs….
The year was 1986- The America’s Cup had left Newport, Rhode Island in September of ’83. Suddenly the whole world wanted to compete in Fremantle, Western Australia to try to win it from the Aussies.
The Twelve Meter World Champs were held on Gage Roads off of Fremantle in 1986- I think it may have been the biggest gathering of Twelves all on one course ever. Must have been a blast.
Anyway check out the attached photo- I’m guessing it was leg two of a race, the fleet reaching on starboard tack toward the gybe mark which is obscured by the spectators lining the railing in the foreground. Looks like good breeze, can only imagine a few of these fairly green teams had some carnage during the gybes…..
Must have been a blast! What does this have to do with iceboating? Must be a few iceboaters in the photo- The Canadians had a boat or two and I think HEART OF AMERICA was in there somewhere, skippered by one Buddy Melges, a Wisconsin resident known to have dabbled in ice yachts a bit….
Speaking of the America’s Cup, don’t forget the lead up races are coming to NYC and Dave Clapp will be driving a spectator boat- scroll down this page for info on how to get aboard and see the action!
