2016 Season

LRIBYC Spring Meeting Report

The Spring Meeting out on Long Island was a great event- Great food was served, drinks were served, and even a few blazers and jackets were worn!

This classy group assembled at the Harbor Crab Company in Patchogue and commandeered the top floor (or were exiled to it, depending on who you asked) and had a great time shooting the breeze, talking trash, and generally having a great time.

Scott Valentine talked a bit about the stuff he is building (he is on a mad tear in the shop) and his road trip out to Wisconsin for the North American Champs with Pete Treusdell. The accompanying video he shot is very well done and is up on the NEIYA and 4LIYC sites. Nice going Scott! Doug Hardy talked about his impromptu trip to NH last winter, and T Thieler talked too much about road trips and masts.

And of course there were some trophies to hand out to the worthy:

Chris Miller- Dave Weeks trophy for highest club member placement in the DN North Americans (He may have been top rookie out there as well- again, depends on who you ask- pat him on the back anyway, he did well)

Scott Valentine- Rich Crucet Award for person who most exemplifies Rich’s ideals and spirit (remind him to fix his port sidestay tang, it’s clearly mounted backwards in his video)

Rich Bautista- Rookie of the year award (great to have some new blood!)

And last but not least Doug Hardy received an award for being intrepid enough to blast up to Winni on a solo mission to get on the ice with the gang! (His recounting of the whole story had the whole place cracking up!)

Goes without saying that Rich Crucet was also fondly remembered. We miss you, man!

Thanks to all who organized the shindig- great time had by all- See everyone at the fall meeting! T

DN NA’s- LI Perspective

We at the NEIYA journalism department are working furiously on a hard-hitting, in depth report on the LRIBYC spring meeting which will be ready soon- but in the meantime

Scott Valentine and Pete Treusdell made the trip to WI for the DN NA champs last year and came home with lots of grins, some silver, and this cool video… Check it out!

GREAT 12 Meter Video

Now that ice season is officially done (unless the Maine-iacs and Canucks are still at it, which knowing that gang may very well be the case) I thought maybe this montage of photos from 12 Meter yacht era of the America’s Cup might be a good way to ease into the soft water season…

Don’t forget that just because it’s warm doesn’t mean we don’t need stuff to put up on the site- whatever you are up to this summer let us know, send in pics, vids, articles, whatever you have and if it is even (very) remotely connected to iceboating we will post it!

In the meantime have a look at these great photos-

Big News For Bill Bucholz!

Congrats Bill!

2016 Warner St Claire Award for Contribution to Iceboating Winner

Posted on April 12, 2016 by NEIYA Admin See article on CIBC page https://iceboat.me/

Bill Award Photo credit Kate Marone

I can not think of anyone who has contributed more to the CIBC and the sport of ice boating this past year and every year he has set blades to ice, than Bill Buchholz. The CIBC is proud to add his name to the Warner St. Claire Award for Contribution to Iceboating Award.

Bill’s coat tails are long and extend over all bodies of water (frozen) near, far and sometimes remote. His coat tails subtly draw the experienced and novice sailors onto the best ice. If Bill isn’t sailing, you can be sure that no one else in Maine and likely the northeast is on the ice.

During his leadership of Chickawaukee Ice Boaters Inc. Bill Buchholz has done all sorts of things such as collaborating in the design of the “Whizz” class of pocket skeeters and having plans drawn up for same, providing masts for several of them and, not least, demonstrating what a fine ice yacht it is in all regards. He continues to dig old classic boats out of the woodwork, resuscitate them, and find homes for them. He is a champion of “touring” ice boating opening our eyes to new ice and getting many of us off our duffs sailing all over the place where we haven’t been before. He has formed sailing relationships with our Northern neighbors in Canada. He has this strange winter turned a crummy local season into a continuing series of interesting and challenging sailing experiences. He has broadened our horizons and concepts of “touring”, adding adventure such as the trips to Moosehead and the recent “100mile race” to our former casual sailing. Now he is trying to get land sailing going in the “off season”. He has done a fine job of keeping “iceboat.me” timely and interesting with almost real time reporting and fine photography. He is a fine imaginative and inspiring leader truly deserving of the recognition of the award.

Bill, thanks for making this years Warner St. Claire award such an easy choice. We all look forward to next and the following seasons with you.

2016 NEIYA SPRING MEETING REPORT

Jeff Holding CourtThe spring NEIYA meeting was a big success-  at least thirty, maybe forty people (some youngsters, some grizzled vets, cruisers, racers, a Maine resident or two, and at least one dog) showed up at Composite Solutions Inc. in Hingham, MA to wrap up the season and hang out a bit before soft water season kicks in full-force.

Plenty of food on hand (thanks to Mike Hart of Hart Brothers Caterting and Dina’s Pizza!) out in the office and plenty of interesting projects to check out in the shop!

Safe to say a good time had by all!  Great to socialize and swap stories and we had a bonus presentation by Jeff Kent (with a little help from his latest co-conspirator Chad Atkins) on the evolution of the composite DN mast.  Jeff began to get serious about DN sailing just as composite rigs were making their first appearance and he has been at the leading edge of that technology since.  He talked about the various rules, requirements, building techniques and materials, successes and failures over the years-  absolutely fascinating stuff, and then we even got to hear about what his latest thinking is about what might be the next big development.  I’d elaborate but we were all sworn to secrecy….

Great way to wrap up the season.  Already looking forward to the fall meeting!  Many thanks to Jeff for letting us have the run of the place and for the presentation-  Thanks to all who showed up as well-  really exciting to see such a jump in attendance over last year.  Well done gang!

Stay tuned and THINK ICE!

Potential Sailing Up North!

This is on the CIBC site (https://iceboat.me/) and it’s too late to be an April Fool’s prank. If you have to miss either spring meeting this weekend this is the only acceptable reason! Check it out and see what you think-

Are We Really Done?

Posted on April 8, 2016 by billbuchholz

The icehounds keep sniffing out good ice on the big northern lakes, and I would be negligent if it weren’t posted here. Next year let’s have the meeting in May!

“Hi Bill.
It’s amazing, but I think we could still sail this weekend if we wanted to.
In Lambton, the level of the water on Lac St. Francois did not increase this week, and cold nights are coming tonight and this weekend.
It must be the same in Lac Megantic.
Denis”

“Hey Bill
Just to let you know, and I know you have already said you are done, Karl and I are thinking Sunday morning might be a go for Millinocket Lk. Had 16-18″ of ice [heard from the ice fishers mouth and looked in the hole] on Wed.. So temps drop Sat. night. We walked right on from boat launch, road in is a bit soft when it warms up though. Or New England Outdoor Center might work for a launch site. I want 65days and that will get it for me, plus it is my age for the skating season 2015.
Just keeping you in the loop.
Bob

Iceboating Hits The Big Time!

Looks like our little old sport of iceboating made the front page of Sailing Anarchy, the most widely read sailing website out there- Very cool! Not only that but Patrick Rynne wrote a great essay on seeing the sport through a newcomer’s eyes.

See the original post at http://sailinganarchy.com/ and Patrick’s amazing work at https://www.facebook.com/waterlust/

cutting edge

siberia worlds!
I like to consider myself to be on the cutting edge of sailing. I sailed in college, did an Olympic campaign in the 49er, started kiting and foiling etc… But just when I thought I had the high performance sailing landscape pretty well covered, I saw my first iceboat race. I didn’t even know what I didn’t know…

In early March we were chatting with our peeps at Sperry about shooting a Waterlust ice sailing video up in New England. We wanted to try out some rad new gear they are working on (I can’t say exactly what it is, but spoiler, it involves ice and having epic grip on your feet that they are famous for). I pinged some buddies up north and learned that El Niño had brought about pretty lousy ice conditions this season. Swinging west I turned my sights on the Midwest only to learn I had missed the DN North Americans by a couple days and temperatures were rising fast. It looked like our ice sailing adventure would have to wait until next season. But then we learned about Baikal Sailing Week.

Lake Baikal is located in Siberia and it’s enormous. With an average depth over 1,000 feet and a length of 400 miles, it contains more freshwater than all the North American Great Lakes combined. It is estimated that 20% of the world’s unmelted freshwater is located here and is home to incredible biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. So it would seem obvious that this natural wonder of the world, so very far from civilization, would be the perfect venue for an international ice sailing regatta.

We only had about a week to make travel arrangements, but thanks to the amazing members of the European DN fleet, we managed to get Russian visas and jumped on a plane. The event organizers were incredibly gracious in helping make it all happen, and I cannot thank them enough.

This was my first taste of ice sailing camaraderie, similar to the Corinthian spirit found across all sailing disciplines, but even stronger. Ice sailors live somewhat of a nomadic life in that they typically must wait until the very last minute before choosing regatta venues. Once the call is made, everybody packs their bags and heads to whatever location is selected. “Ice scouts” scour near and far for that perfect thick and smooth ice that sends them rocketing over 60 mph to the next mark. The entire scene is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and despite living in Florida, I want in!

I knew absolutely nothing about the DN (Detroit News) iceboat class before getting here. To say these guys tech out would be a massive understatement. I thought foilers were bad, but they’ve got nothing on the ice crew. But that’s the nature of high performance sailing, the faster you go the more important tuning your kit becomes. Mental toughness plays a big role in this game because of the speed. Imagine missing a shift in your local one design fleet. Your buddies might pull 10 seconds ahead but they still seem within reach. Battling on to grind them down isn’t too hard to manage mentally. Now imagine what that 10 second gap looks like when you’re ripping around the buoys at a mile per minute! It’s over 800 feet, nearly 3 football fields! It takes a special kind of tenacity to keep your head in the game with those kind of distances lost and gained every moment.

This is one reason why ice sailors, like foilers and other high performance racers, are always sniffing out an edge in their gear. Similar to the moth fleet, teching out and being social seem to go hand in hand. Beers in the tent and post regatta karate (you know that thing we all do when we use our hands to show how two boats were coming together) are accompanied with discussions on composite flex, steel metallurgy, and the all important concept of apparent wind. So far my experience with this fleet has been inspiring and humbling. I used to think 30 knots was quick and 40 knots was balls to the wall. These guys don’t even budge off their resting heart rate until then. Am I ruined forever? Will foiling now feel like slogging in a laser? Perhaps….but at the same time, I just discovered yet another epically fun aspect of our sport that I know nothing about, and that is what keeps me coming back for more! DN Worlds is in America next winter….perhaps just enough time to learn how to get around the course without killing myself?

To follow the daily action here in Siberia the rest of the week, tune into or Facebook page or find us on Instagram or Twitter at @waterlust. We’re 12 hours ahead of EST, so when you’re sleeping we’re shooting and vice versa.

-Patrick Rynne.

Last Hurrah???

Bill Bucholz reports in from Lac St. Francois- check iceboat.me for details- Could be good!

“Ice surface about #5. Not ideal conditions for the 100 mile race, but the sailing is good. We’ll be on the ice today until sunset and tomorrow. If we have a consensus, we will set marks for a 50 mile race in the morning.”
