KEWASA – Summer Iceboating Lecture
Hey Folks- Be sure to go see Joe Meade hold court at the FLBM- this promises to be an interesting event! Read on….
The Moore Brothers Company Goes To The America’s Cup!
Hey Folks! The Americas Cup racing has been fast and furious, right up there with the hard-water sailing we all enjoy….
The NEIYA’s own Oliver Moore is involved- In addition to being a cat sailor and ranked DN campaigner he is also one of the founders and big cheese of The Moore Brothers Company, or “Moore-Bro-Co” for those of you who can’t resist a rhyme….
Whatever you want to call them they are in the composites field; they can make molds, tooling, and finished parts in carbon and other materials, some more exotic than others!
They have a presence at the America’s Cup in Bermuda, having built clewboards for all the jibs, machined “floating foam” for the top of the ORACLE wing (keeps the boat from turning turtle if they flip), and built shroud fairings for ORACLE and TEAM JAPAN. It should be noted that the fairings were so cool and worked so well they were ruled illegal. They must have been good!
Congrats to Oliver and the company for getting their foot in the door of that world-
For more info on what they are up to click the link below or Google “The Moore Brothers Company”
NEIYA Heads North
Ever hear of this one? It’s a wild sounding race up the West Coast from Port Townsend, WA to Ketchikan, ALASKA.
Crazy weather, killer whales, fishing boats, packs of rabid sea otters, whatever the heck they have out there to deal with will challenge participants to the max.
Of course a hard-water sailor would have to be involved. Joachim Roesler is a land and ice sailor, and (possibly, I have to look it up) an NEIYA member. He will be sailing this craft and posting updates- check out the boat here:

America’s Cup Racing Starts This Week!
Hey Folks-
The America’s Cup begins in Bermuda this week. It’s a whole new ball game this cycle so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
The boats are interesting and everyone is excited about the fact that they go 30, 40, maybe even 50 knots every now and then. Which is cool but of course us smug iceboaters can’t help but yawn a bit at those numbers….
In any case click the link and see where and when to watch. Scroll down a bit for complete schedule and stations for the various series.
Happy viewing and Think Ice!

Spring Launchings
Eben Whitcomb, DN sailor and all around boat guy, sends this shot of two boats getting launched at Pilots Point Marina.
The one on the right is TICONDEROGA, a classic ketch.
The one on the left is FREEDOM, the 1980 America’s Cup winner. Look closely and you’ll see she is sporting a brand new Composite Solutions Inc rudder (as well as spreaders, boom and spinnaker pole).
Eben reports that “apart from the rudder all work done by me!!”

Iceboat Lecture And DN North Americans Call For Volunteers
Never too hot out to talk iceboats- with that in mind go see Joe Meade giving a lecture on iceboating on June 15th at the Keuka Yacht Club at 7pm as part of the Finger Lakes Boat Museum’s Monthly Lecture Series. Should be cool- Joe is an enthusiastic iceboater, a great speaker, and a heck of a nice guy to boot! More information will follow on this site-
As for planning out your winter, John Atkins reminds us that the dates for the 2018 NAs have been set. Jan 21 thru 28, 2018. This is being hosted by the Eastern, Canadian and Mountian Lakes regions. With that said John and the organizers are looking for Race Committee volunteers. If you have any interest in helping please let me know. They are also looking for 4-wheelers for use on the ice. We won’t know the location until we get there so if you are willing to travel to wherever or just stay with in your own region let him know. Email him at jhatkins@me.com and be a part of what promises to be a great event!

Spring 2017 CSI Gathering Recap
A good crowd gathered yesterday and to hear of recent, past and talk of adventures yet to occur.
Commodore James “T” Thieler and Eben Whitcomb entertained the crowd with tales from their recent trip to Baikal. Through words and pictures we felt like we were there with them. Thanks to both for taking the stage…
Leo Healy, life long ice boater and NEIYA founding member, shared stories from his own Baikal trip during the closing years of the Cold War in the late 80’s. From my account they were not that different, so must be true.
No trip to CSI would be complete without getting a peak at some of the Go-Faster innovations Jeff is working on. The latest items include █████, █████████ a new ███████████ and █████. Sorry for the redaction. You will just have to show up the next time.
Big thanks to Jeff Kent for once again inviting us all to CSI (http://www.csi-composites.com/dn-iceboats/).
The NEIYA traveler’s award goes to island dwellers from Long Island, NY and Nantucket. Cheers to the eight guys that journeyed across water and land to participate. And special thanks to Paul from Albany show showed up on the CSI doorstep looking to upgrade his program for racing. Paul we hope to see you on the line next season.
It’s going to be a long hot summer but the ice will come in the third quarter.

One Last Sail?
Hey Folks- Just saw this on the CIBC site- food for thought if anyone is up for taking one last stab at a sailing day! See CIBC site for details….
“Just a note to tuck in the back of your mind: Moosehead will be having a cold snap early next week, with temps Monday nightaround twenty. If the edge survives this week, there will be a small contingent on Tuesday heading to Rockwood who refuse to accept the Robins and crocuses. Stay tuned here, or be in touch.
The building and repair season starts now: always put your runners away sharp, replace missing pins, knock off the punch list before it’s forgotten!”

Spring Meeting
Posted on March 23, 2017 by billbuchholz
The CIBC will hold it’s annual spring meeting on Sunday, April 9 at the Damariscotta Lake Farm Inn. Meeting to begin at 11:00, followed by a fine pot luck lunch. Last year’s food was among the best ever; let’s maintain the tradition!
Anita asks that we park on the north side of the building to keep the restaurant parking on the other side clear for business.
