DN European Champs DONE
DN Euros are done! Looks like breeze and snow on the last day shook things up a bit-
Jarek Radski kept it together to take the title and Chris Berger sailed very well to stay in the top ten at 7th place. Not bad at all for a relative newbie and a Yooper at that!
Well done. Results here:

Weekend Sailing
In spite of the weather it sounds like there are options for sailing this weekend:
1) Sounds like a group of sailors will be scratch racing DNs out of Kingston Yacht Club in Kingston, Ontario Saturday and maybe Sunday
2) Scratch racing tomorrow on Waneta (a bit west of Ithaca, NY) First race at 11 am. The Waneta Inn has always been hospitable to us and reached out to me last fall to let me know we are welcome to use their ramp. Please be respectful of others and ice fishermen and don’t block the ramp.Surface by the Waneta Inn is rough from its initial freeze. Racing will be further North of the Inn. The surface improves considerably going North. Picture attached.Remember, the ice has not been checked 100% at this time. Also, don’t rely on ice fishermen or other ice boaters to determine its safety. That is up to you, and you alone.
3) Heard rumors that Bantam Lake in CT might be sailable….
As ever, proceed with caution- your safety is your responsibility and yours alone! Don’t sail alone and take all precautions.

Regatta and / or Sailing This Weekend??
Hello All- the weather situation this week has been bizarre- maybe things are back to semi-normal now and with a little luck we can all get shovel-ed out (up north) and dried out (down here in RI) and do some sailing this weekend, possibly even get a regatta in.
If you have sail-able ice get the word out! We’d all love to know about it.

Deb Whitehorse Honored!
This just in from out west via Mike Bloom- all of us in New England also send our congrats and appreciation for all you’ve done- you’ve been a great friend to be class and the people in it!
Here’s the article:
IDNIYRA Executive Secretary Deb Whitehorse was honored, among others, Saturday evening by Lake City Minnesota Mayor Mark Nichols when she was presented with a “Key to the City.”
Lake City has a deep and rich iceboat history and had just hosted the DN Western Region Championships, the ISA’s and the Northwestern’s over three consecutive weekends. The Mayor cited Deb’s longstanding commitment and dedication to the great sport of iceboating as the reason for her selection.
Mayor Nichols presented the award during the Northwestern Regatta which was sailed on Lake Pepin.

Scratch Racing & More Friday!
Hello all-
A group of NEIYA sailors will be scratch racing on Quaboag Pond in Brookfield, MA tomorrow starting at about 10 AM.
If you have a DN or any type of iceboat come join the fun. Racing will be informal and cautious.
Not racing ok come out for a cruise and join in if you ever thought about racing. Who knows you might even catch the competitive spirit.
Hope for some good weather and will see you there!

Work Bench
Had to share this. It’s Chris Miller’s work bench, and as you can see, it’s a horror show.
Note the total lack or organization or thought given to work flow or efficiency. Nothing is clamped down, the boom being worked on is laying on top of a pile of junk for maximum wiggle and unsteadiness. Great way to damage and / or lose the parts under it as well.
The rule book is out and open; most likely a lame attempt to give the impression that Miller can actually read.
Also take note of the can of Xylene (Xylene?!? Really?!?) placed exactly in between the blowtorch on the bench and the red hot space heater on the floor. What could possibly go wrong? We can safely assume the pile of rags on the floor is soaked with this stuff. Put a fan in the window for cryin’ out loud!
There are at least three projects stacked on top of each other here, virtually guaranteeing that not one of them goes well. Some type of boom project, a shroud project, sharpening stones, Velcro (or is that shim tape?) and god knows what else is going on here.
Shockingly, there are no beer cans, whisky bottles or contraband visible. Not even a ratty coffee mug. I have no idea what to make of this.
The second photo shows the end result of this nightmare: a slick adjustment system for the boom blocks. Well done, Mr Miller. Now clean up that bench and, as Jack Ericson says, “Put all your stuff at Parade Rest!”

Upcoming Regatta and Cruising
Hello All- The season is up and rolling! I’ve been out of commission for a little while but I’m hearing rumors of great cruising on good ice up in Maine- see the CIBC website for details https://iceboat.me/ and join the fun.
If you are interested in racing tune your gear up for a potential regatta next weekend (most likely Saturday January 19). As always we will try to keep everyone informed as to where and when we will race and provide as much notice as possible leading up to the event. Stay tuned to this website for details!
There may be some mid-week scratch racing going on as well if anyone can play hooky from the day job- again, stay tuned to this site.

Mystery Boat, Cont’d….
We put out the call to identify a mystery boat a week or so ago and I figured I’d just share the responses- Looks like we have a few clues but it sounds like we need more photos and maybe someone can check it out in person- it belongs to Jim Oxenford and it is located on Chaumont Bay at the eastern end of Lake Ontario.
First things first: the barn is a dairy barn- Jim says the cows are long gone! Tom Gloudemans adds that “That’s a milking barn. The metal stanchions separate the cows when they are in their stalls being milked. The trough to the right of the boat is the manure trough, no explanation needed.”
With that mystery solved we can move on to the good stuff- Here are the comments and further questions on the boat- Hope this clears the waters and please email me with any more info or ideas!
Bill Bucholz chimed in first, about two minutes after I put the original post up. He is pretty hardcore!
“My guess is a Palmer. No one else that I know of built those long tapered sterns, and the plank has a reverse curve and should be hollow. The chocks are different, though. There should be a builders label on the forward face of the aft cockpit coaming and on the side of the boom. Tiller steering? If he can get a look at the bulkhead at the foot of the fwd cockpit or behind the aft cockpit seat they should be diagonal planked. There will be a longitudinal in the fwd cockpit to support the mast step. The plank mounts will be cast aluminum and look just like standard Palmer. What’s the white stuff on them?
Cheers, Bill”
Next was John Low:
“I am guessing that could possibly be a Monotype XV, based on the dual cockpit design, but I am not certain. I would also guess that the building was a dairy barn. Where is it located?
As you know, Bill Bucholz had a Monotype built which was featured in Wooden Boat magazine. His was called Fast Piece of Furniture. I am not sure where it ended up, but it could have been Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. Monotypes were popular on the Baltic Sea before the Second World War and made a comeback in Communist Bloc Eastern Europe during the Cold War.
Regards,
John Henry Low
Nite 430”And Bill Converse offers this:
“I vaguely remember seeing that boat on the ice years ago(early 80’s) at lake Wequaket in Hyannis when we had a Big Boat Weekend. Large ice boats showed from all over New England. It is what was called an E boat, or E class Skeeter( we were not that sophisticated here in those days) and is obviously a two seater. The local E boats had an 18 1/2″, 6-8 inches wide tapered mast with a 9 foot boom(low rig), about 18′ long with about a 14′ Runner Plank. Some had a short spring board making it 21-22 feet in length. Most of the hardware was either sailboat hardware, or was custom made by local machinists. The most famous of the sailors around here were the Allys from Fall River area. There was Julie, Joe, and Teddy. Julie was a local machinist who made most of the parts for their boats. The only one left is Teddy. I have seen him at Lakeville a few times. He had a boat almost identical to that pictured. They were quite fast in their day. There were a number of E boats from the cape. Unfortunately Teddy is probably the only one who could identify that boat. Leo Healy may, but you’d have to email him the picture. I will keep rummaging around in my memory. Where is the boat now? Bill Converse”
The truth is out there somewhere! Looking forward to hearing from everyone. Jim, if you’re reading this send more photos of the boat- details and close-ups please!
Thanks for sending us on the quest…. Think ICE! T

Mystery Boat Needs To Be Identified
While we wait to see what the weather event will do for / to the lakes over the next 24 hours take a moment to read the following email and take a look at the photo. This gentleman is psyched to have this boat and is wondering what exactly it is! I have to say I’m also curious as to what the building was used for.
In any case email me at t_thieler@yahaoo.com if you can identify the boat. Winner gets bragging rights!
Here is the email from the new owner:
“I recently became the owner of this boat below and I was wondering if you have any idea how old it is or any other information on it. It has a wooden mast and the boom and sail is visible behind it on the pipes. The cross brace/leg goes in the rear and the steering runner attaches at the front with a large bolt. Any information would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jim Oxenford”
Soft Water Action….
…Some hard water sailors would say that is a contradiction in terms but nonetheless this is interesting to watch-
It’s the start of the Sydney to Hobart race yesterday (that’s Boxing Day in Australia)- they have a ton of entrants every race but the focus is on the five giant super-maxis that start first- they have big canting keels, big crews, big sails, big foils, BIG budgets, and not one of them can go as fast as a two-hundred dollar CheapSkate!
But check it out anyway. A good way to kill a half an hour before you go into the shop or out on the road to scout ice or better yet, go sailing.
Happy viewing! The five-minute gun is at 25 minutes into the broadast- THINK ICE!!

NEIYA Tune-Up Clinic!
The annual tune up clinic was held last weekend at Steve Lamb’s shop and was well attended in spite of the fact that there was sailable ice up in Maine! A tough choice for some but a good problem to have….
This author was not in attendance but I’ve been assured that there was quite a few new sailors in attendance and many tips and tricks and stories went around. Very sorry I missed it!
If history is any guide the food was also amazing-
Many thanks as always to Steve and his family for hosting the event and to everyone who participated. Hope everyone will be on the ice and well-prepped when things get cold again!
Happy Holidaze and. THINK ICE!!
