Congrats to all the award winners!
The 2019 Awards Dinner was enjoyed by 28 members, Bill Buckholtz and his wife drove down from Maine to join us. Proclamations were read by the Officers and the cannon was fired to open the evening. Dinner by the Oar Restaurant was served in our private room and was the fine quality we have received every year. Howie Dietz gave us a history of his Iceboat beginning with the Club in the ‘60s. Doug Hardy received the Senior active sailor award. Fred Greis was awarded “The most interesting man” award for his DN adventures on Swan Pond out of view of any Skeeter Sailors.. Chris Miller gathered the award for the highest member result in the DN World’s along with the newest award the “Rich Crucet Travel Award” for covering about 5,000 miles during the season from the Midwest to the Northeast in search of ice. Scott Valentine earned the top result in the DN North American Championships award. Mike Acebo with the “Hard Way” photo award. Sorry if I missed any. Link to photos:
And a video of the “Hard Way Trip”
Great time had by all at the NEIYA spring meeting, held at Moore Brothers Company (formerly Composite Solutions Inc) in Bristol RI.
Thanks to Oliver, Sam and Chris Moore for opening the doors to the shop and letting us all nose around and ask silly questions all day. The food was good, the jokes were bad, the stories embellished heavily, and the work day was relatively uninterrupted!
Looking forward to next season already- As Bill Bucholz says “now is the start of iceboat building season….”
Think ICE! T
Hello All-
The NEIYA Spring Meeting has been scheduled for April 20, 2019. Clear your calendars and come join the fun! Grizzled veterans and future rookies welcome.
The place will be the Moore Brothers Company shop, 253 Franklin St, Bristol, Rhode Island 02809. Heading west on Franklin St look for a driveway on the right with a big gray building on the left and a big red building on the right. Moore Bro Co is in the gray building. If you miss the driveway take a right on Buttonwood and take the next right into the parking lot.
The date is SaturdayApril 20th / Hours 11 – 3
Refreshments and lunch provided – nothing fancy, just the usual champagne, caviar and foie gras. Or possibly pizza.
Bring iceboat related items for sale. Maybe one last chance to move some gear!
Oliver Moore, Jeff Kent, T Thieler, and who knows who else will be on hand so it’s a good bet there will be some discussion (formal or otherwise) on a range of topics, including but not limited to the worlds of iceboats, dirt boats, regular boats, composites, road trips, sailing stories, and God knows what else.
If you are interested in attending please give T a shout via email so we can get a rough idea of how many mouths to feed- t_thieler
Looking forward to the event and seeing everyone! Think ICE!!
Ever had a disappointing day on the ice due to gear failure? Maybe you can relate to this video…
It’s the 2003 America’s Cup, Race 1, ALINGHI vs TEAM NEW ZEALAND. The notoriously tough one for Team NZ, boat taking on water, boom broken, jibs ripping out of the headfoil…. Not what you need in the first 30 minutes of an America’s Cup race. Glad no one injured.
Very instructive though, I guess the lesson is you have to practice in the conditions you are going to race in and build a little reliability into your gear. Gotta finish to win! Listen closely to the commentators and on-board audio. Can glean a few lessons here and there….
Click and take it in….
