Great Western Challenge Update….

This is from the Minnesota website via Andre Baby- looks like things are shaping up for the Western Challenge…. Change the oil in the car, check the trailer lights, get the boats out, and start making travel plans!

The first regatta of the season is scheduled for Friday Nov 30-Dec 2, 2018. Per JD, usual location will be best ice in Minnesota. We have been sailing on ice since Nov 16. Many lakes up north are now thick enough.
We now have a beautiful new freeze of Battle Lake, just north of our usual Christina near Ashby, Mn.
A number of lakes closer to Minneapolis should come thru in the next week. Very little snow predicted in our regatta locations. Time to sharpen runners and check your equipment. Watch this site or Facebook Minnesota Iceboaters for updates.

Happy Thanksgiving On This Chilly Day!

Wow girl, it might be Thanksgiving and the start of a nice cold snap but that ice is not safe.

Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving. We all have lots to be thankful for but since this is the official NEIYA site I am thankful for this cold snap and the prospect of early ice. Enjoy friends and family and find some time to work on your equipment over the long weekend.

Next up: The Annual Tune Up Clinic. Generously hosted once again by the Arthur C. Lamb Company in Canton MA but most of us just know it as Steve Lamb’s shop.

Date: Saturday December 15th
Time: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Location: Arthur C. Lamb Company Refreshments: Served continuously throughout the day and lunch about noon

We have a big day planed

Highlights

  • Dave Fortier: Runner Edge Prep with stoning demo
  • Eben Whitcomb & Greg Cornelius on Rules / Safety
  • Jeff Kent & James “T” Thieler on Shifting gears – how to set your boat up for different
Wind/Ice conditions and how components work together.

This event is an excellent opportunity to get the information you need to get on the ice for the first time or go faster than last year. If you are interested we will help get you in your first boat. Remember there is plenty of room so bring iceboats or parts for sale.

Have something laying around your not using? Bring it for someone else to enjoy. Your old equipment could be someone’s first boat. The items on the NEIYA classifieds page might be available for drop off and pickup. Ask the seller(s) directly.

HAVE AN OLD ICEBOAT IN THE BARN? BRING IT. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AND HELP GET YOU ON THE ICE THIS SEASON.

We welcome any newcomers trying to get into ice boating and onto the ice this season. Have a boat sitting in your garage, barn or cellar? Bring it down we have experts standing by to go over your craft and develop a plan to get you sailing this season. Don’t know how to rig your boat? We will show you. Not sure if all the pieces are there? We will go over it with you. We are here to help usher you safely onto the ice. No reservation needed but would appreciate you dropping me a note so we can be sure to reserve room.

See you all there and let me know if you have any questions.

Bob Crinon. Poster Boy.

Hey Folks-

If you search the interweb for “North DN Sails” you’ll come upon this great shot of Bob Crinion of Nova Scotia puttin’ a hurtin’ on Chris Miller of Long Island at the North American champs last year.

It’s a great shot even if Bob does have his elbow out of the boat. And his head up in the air. And his toes sticking straight up. (Sorry Bob, couldn’t resist! It’s a New England thing….) If you want to know who is driving the boats in the background you’ll have to do your own research!

By the way the new North Sails are pretty sexy and if you want some info on them check out https://northsails.com/sailing/en/od/dn-iceboat

ICE REPORTS

Hey Gang- John Ziermann sent this out from LI, a good guide to a perfect ice report- Good time to refresh your memory!

TO ALL:

At one of our LRIBYC club meeting someone brought up the ever
important “Ice Report Content”.

What is the Perfect Report?

I need advice and some suggestions.

Here are some of my thoughts and I got some of what you see

below from John S. at NEIYA.(no particular order)

a. Where is the ice?

b. When did you check?
c. Name the nearest town.

d. Where is the access?
e. Ice thickness and composition (4 inches black ice with 3 inches of snow ice on top).
f. How much of the ice did you check?(10ft.,10yds,10mi)

g. State the hazards.(pressure ridge, shell ice, drain holes, open holes)

h. Size of the plate.
i. How did you survey the ice? (walk, skate, bike, sail, drive by, fly over)
j. Best way to get in touch with you to confirm information.

Some of us will drive a long way if we knew it was worth it.

ALL OF US WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU SAVE US THE TRIP!

As usual Mike Madge gets the prize…. He lives somewhere between Michigan and the surface of the moon…. Mike, if you’re reading this please tell us where the hell you actually live! And where this particular Whitefish Lake is located…. Montana? Minnesota? Wisconsin? CANADA?!?

In any case he writes:

“Just back from Whitefish Lake
4″ of Black ice with maybe 1/4″ covering of Snow.Wind 15 gusting to 20 made for a fast ride!”

Well done Mike- Look forward to hearing from you-

DN GOLD CUP AND NA CHAMPS NOTICE OF RACE!

It’s ON folks! If you own a DN of any vintage dust it off and come check this event out! No matter what your threat level is regattas like this are quite a spectacle- Will be well over 100 boats, several countries represented, and of course all kinds of characters and insanely close racing. This is the Big Show, folks….

If you aren’t interested in racing but would like to be involved contact the organizers and ask about volunteering. It takes a lot to put on an event like this and I’m sure the organizers would be grateful for anyone who could help out in any way!

NEIYA Annual Meeting Wrap-Up

Hello All!
As always the meeting was a terrific gathering of fascinating people with a lust for speed and cool craft and possibly a need for group therapy. But hey, until then we will keep hitting the ice!

The parking lot scene was good despite the weather, lots of boats and gear changing hands, no doubt some people are in the shop already making sure all the bits and pieces will fit when we get some ice…. Which will be sooner than you think!
The meeting went at a good pace, wasn’t too excruciating, and covered q

uite a bit of ground. Race results, trophy presentations, Hardway certificate distributions, future plans discussed, past adventures recalled, backs patted, moments of silence for some ice sailors we lost, and finally a slate was approved

No one was appointed in absentia. Those of you who stayed home can stop worrying.

We also had some cool door prizes raffled off, many thanks to John Stanton and Landfall Navigation for hooking us up.All of this was fueled by the usual fantastic catering and a cash bar at our new venue, the Hudson-Concord Elks Hall in Hudson, MA. Great place, hope they’ll have us back next year!

Many thanks to John Stanton and Bob Haag for putting the event together and all of their work on behalf of the club. These guys put in way more time than most of us realize! Thanks also to Steve Madden for all of his efforts as Regatta Chairman and of course to everyone who showed up!

The next big events are the Great Western Challenge (mainly for DNs but other classes welcome) on the best ice in or near Minnesota on from Nov 30 – Dec 2. Following that it’s the tune-up clinic at Steve Lamb’s shop on December 15. Rick Bishop is working to get that put together and it promises to be just as good as last year- and last year was the most interesting and informative one we’ve had in awhile! Even if you don’t care about getting your iceboat tuned up you should attend strictly on culinary grounds. The food is always interesting and unique!! Personally, I enjoyed seeing all the gang and meeting some of the brand-new and relatively new sailors.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the ice soon! If anyone has questions or would like to follow up on anything feel free to email me at t_thieler@yahoo.com.

Look forward to hearing from you!
